Alzheimer’s Ed Story
Meet my brother in law ‘Ed Mongeau ‘ he was 54 when he was first diagnosed with Dementia, a form of Alzheimer’s. My sister is his caregiver, but she could no longer care for him herself in their home.
Ed is 60 years old and he now lives at Bradford Manor Nursing Care Facility in Bradford Pa for Alzheimer’s patients.
Ed went from a very talented vital man who loved to hunt, deteriorate into a confused and angry man who became more like a boy than a man. My sister whom loved and cared for him has to watch her husband of many years lose a little piece of himself every day.
The first sign of this disease was just subtle where he would get confused about what he was doing or was supposed to be doing. Barb and Ed ran and operated a small window cleaning and handyman business in Galeton PA, when one day Ed was supposed to go to a job site to complete an assigned job and he went to the wrong site and never showed up to the client site whom was expecting him.
My sister knew something was terribly wrong and when they got the diagnosis, it was not long before the disease had progressed to the point Ed could no longer work or be left alone. As Barb struggled with the new responsibilities of caring for her husband, and trying to run a business on her own Ed’s condition continued to decline.
He became easily agitated and hard for Barb to handle alone. One day he would be alert and happy and then others he would be so disoriented and angry.
The hardest decision my sister had to make was the day she took Ed to Bradford Manor. Caregivers are faced with these decisions and challenges every day.
Barb visit’s Ed regularly, but the worst visits are when he would just
walk around in a daze, not even knowing Barb was there and sometimes even referring to her as his mother.
I would like to Thank all the Business and Private Sponsors for your support and donations.
The event was a success even with the bad weather arriving just as the event began. We did not allow it to dampen our evening although the Corn Hole Tournament had to be cancelled due to the bad weather we still were able to raise $660.00 to benefit Alzheimer’s Foundation of America
We could not have raised over $600.00 for this cause without all of your help.
Donations are still being accepted on the website and will continue to be available indefinitely.
